International Youth Day was instituted by the UN in 1999, to promote the development of youth. Recognizing that the youth are “are creative, resourceful and enthusiastic agents of change,” the day aims to work for their betterment and by extension, that of humanity.

National Youth Day is celebrated in India on 12 January on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. In 1984 the Government of India declared the day as the National Youth Day and since 1985 the even is celebrated in India every year.
