Google Balloons - A Project Loon

Posted by Labels: at
Google is experimenting with helium-filled balloons that beam the internet from the sky.
Developed over a period of 18 months, these jellyfish-shaped balloons are part of Project Loon that Google has commissioned them in New Zealand(Christchurch and Canterbury in June 2013).

What is Project Loon?
Many of us think of the Internet as a global community. But two-thirds of the world’s population does not yet have Internet access. Project Loon is a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed to connect people in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online after disasters.

What are Google Balloons?
The helium-filled balloons are made from a thin polyethylene film and are 15 meters (49 feet) in diameter when fully inflated.

Where are they present?
They float in the stratosphere about 20 kilometers (12 miles) above the Earth.

How Google Balloons work?
The balloons would sail on the stratosphere's winds in a continuous circuit around the globe. The balloons come equipped with flight computers, and Google would control the balloons' altitude from the ground, keeping them moving along a desired channel by using different winds at different heights.

Are Google Balloons revolutionary?
Google says past attempts to control balloons have involved tethering them or using expensive motors to keep them in place. They say simply sailing with the winds was one of the company's breakthrough ideas.

What is the advantage?
Google says the balloons have the potential to provide internet access far more cheaply, quickly and widely than traditional underground fiber cables.

One downside is that computer users on the ground would need to install a receiver to get the signal.

Reach of Google Balloons?
The transmitter on each balloon would beam down the internet to an area about 1,250 square kilometers (780 square miles) - twice the size of New York City.

Challenges Google Balloons face?
Managing the flight of just one balloon in our complex and ever-changing atmosphere is a huge challenge. Trying to harmonize an entire fleet of thousands of them will be mind-boggling.

A school can register only once for the KBC Schools Episode. Only one student can be nominated by a school.

Shortlisting will be based on the total number of correct answers provided. In the event of more eligible entries than required, the nearest-to answer will be used to break a tie. In case of a tie in the „nearest-to‟ question also, the Company will select the school on a random basis or any other method that they think is reasonable.
Upon the Student answering the above mentioned questions by selection of the options given by the website to the respective questions, the School if selected, will receive a call on the registered telephone number within 7 (seven) days after closure of registration lines for further participation.

In the event there is less than the required number of Registrants, the Registrants with less than the required number of correct answers may be selected by the randomizer. In the event of a tie, the answer to the „nearest to‟ questions will be used to select the entry. In case of a tie in the „nearest-to‟ question also, the Company will select the school on a random basis or any other method that they think is reasonable.
The CCE will notify such selected Registrants for Auditions by telephone and will confirm their details (school name, address, pin code & student name) before proceeding further. If the details provided by the Principal/School on this call do not match the existing details provided by them, then only one further opportunity will be provided to such selected Principals/Schools, after which the call will be terminated.

In the event the nominated student and teacher are not available on those dates, the Principal/School will not be permitted to continue with the registration process. In the event the nominated student and teacher are available, the CCE will ask the documents and photographs.

Search for "241543903" on Google, and you get many photos of people with their heads in a freezer!

Posted by Labels: at
An image MEME that started on Tumblr in early 2009 and spread to social networks around the world has just made its way back to Tumblr, where many users are seeing it for the first time. The MEME is called "241543903" and it involves taking a photo of yourself with your head in your freezer and tagging it 241543903. That way, anyone who searches for that magic number on Google Images will see a whole ton of head-in-a-freezer photos. 241543903 seems to have peaked earlier this year, but it's been revived recently by a Tumblr post that now has over 2,000 likes and reblogs.

241543903 is totally weird the first time you see it: some people have Photoshopped their "decapitated" heads into the freezer, while others have taken normal photos by putting the camera inside their iceboxes or setting it up behind them. There are also some 241543903 drawings, and there's even a bit of crossover with the popular "motivational poster" image format.

The head-in-a-freezer photo MEME was started in April 2009 by David Horvitz, a New York artist known for (among other things) starting a subscription service for his daily photos of the sky. At the time, Horvitz was running a Tumblr where he would post instructions to his audience each day. These were generally off-the-wall things like "record a dramatic reading of a YouTube comment fight" or "ask to watch the sunset from the roof of the tallest building near your house." In November of this year, David had a book of these instructions, Everything That Can Happen in a Day, published by Random House.

Taking a photo with your head in the freezer and tagging it with the seemingly random number "241543903" was one of these instructions. Horvitz told us he got the idea after telling a sick friend, Mylinh Nguyen, to try sticking her head in a freezer. The number Horvitz picked was a combination of the serial number of his refrigerator and the barcodes on a bag of edamame and a package of frozen soba noodles he was keeping there.

The first 241543903 photo was posted to Horvitz' Flickr account on April 6, 2009, shortly before he posted the instructions on Tumblr. However, he uploaded a previous head-in-freezer shot in April of 2008, well before the 241543903 MEME started. This earlier shot was tagged 241543903, but that may have happened after the MEME started.

Shortly after the first picture was posted, the MEME blew up on Google's social network, Orkut, which is one of the most popular websites in Brazil.

David told that he printed up 100 small fliers about 241543903 and sent them with a friend to Brazil. His friend told him she passed the fliers out to random young people. If the fliers are what caused this image to go viral, 241543903 is a rare case of an internet MEME spreading through IRL means.

Once the head-in-a-fridge MEME had taken over Orkut in 2009, spread to Japan, and then jumped to Facebook in early 2010.

An American couple married each other 100 times!

Posted by Labels: at
A loved-up American couple have set a new Guinness World Record for the most marriage vow renewals, having exchanged their vows for the 100th time on Sunday afternoon at the Hard Rock Café in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Lauren and David Blair from Hendersonville, Tennessee, USA, first met in 1982 and were instantly smitten with each other.

Their first date came two days later and within three months David had proposed.

The course to true love being rarely smooth, Lauren actually said no the first time.

However, it wasn't long before Lauren accepted and in the summer of 1984 the couple were married in Topanga Canyon, California.

Since then Lauren and David, at 60 and 58 years old respectively, have renewed their vows a further 99 times, each ceremony taking place in a different location.

Asked why they continuously renew their vows, Lauren says: "We were both in long term relationships in the past that didn't work out. We knew we were meant for each other and wanted to continually share that vow experience. I love to look into David's eyes as he is repeating his vows. I know that this man will love me until the day I die. Of course, David will tell you that he does it for the honeymoons!"
